History
Ardara is a traditional centre for weaving and knitwear production. Its
historical importance was recognised in the granting of Heritage Town
status to Ardara. This allowed for the development of the town's Heritage
Centre which contains an interesting exhibition documenting the history
of the weaving craft in the area.
The display includes a real life weaver at work, who is happy to tell
tales of the old days and explain how the weaving loom works as he spins.
The heritage centre also includes a fascinating photographic display which
illustrates how life was lived during the height of the cottage weaving
industry.
The centre includes a coffee shop and gift shop, where traditional Aran
sweaters can be purchased.
Another work of historical importance is the stained glass window by
Modernist artist Evie Hone which is situated in the Catholic church at
the end of the town.
